This shop wasn’t supposed to be mine. I moved in This shop wasn’t supposed to be mine. I moved into this house with a plan: build a shared shop, fill it with tools, ideas, memories, all of it. But that plan didn’t exactly stick. Somehow, in the funniest possible twist, the basement space was already painted blue long before I got here. So after everything fell apart, “The Blue Shop” just kind of happened naturally. It’s admittedly a little on the nose but instead of letting the space become a ghost of what it was supposed to be, I keep building anyway. I extend a huge thanks to @sawdust_gypsy_ for making this sign for me on her laser. She showed up at exactly the right time.

I’ve been beating the heck out of these boots fo I’ve been beating the heck out of these boots for a year… and someone just asked me if they were brand new. Not a joke. I’ve had my @carolinashoe 8” Logger Work Boots for over a year now. Between my day job and Call Me Mabie, I’m in shops all over North America, on my feet all day, for long days, back-to-back, on concrete floors, covered in sawdust, traveling in them, and hitting them with real wear. These boots have been there for all of it.

The first thing I noticed? Comfort. If there was a break-in period, I genuinely didn’t feel it. I just threw them on and went to work. Two friends tried Carolina for the first time this past month and said the exact same thing within minutes. That matters to me more than anything because I’m not the guy kicking his boots off after a couple hours. I’m in them all day, sometimes multiple days straight.

And somehow… they still look fresh. Like, last night someone asked if they were new. They’re not. They’ve been worked. And they’ve held up.

So yeah. This isn’t some polished ad. Carolina does support my YouTube channel, but this post isn’t part of that. This is just me telling you what I’d tell any friend who asked what I actually wear in the shop.

They’ve stayed comfortable. They’ve taken the abuse. And I’ve got zero reason not to recommend them.

Also worth saying: Carolina actually shows up for this community. And that means something to me.

Simple as that.

Many people baby the things they make. Xyla Foxlin Many people baby the things they make. Xyla Foxlin does the opposite. She puts her work into the world and lets it get scratched, worn, tested, and lived with. Because what’s the point of making something if it never actually lives? There’s a difference between being proud of your work… and being precious about it. The best pieces aren’t the ones that stay perfect… they’re the ones that earn their scars.

PITTSBURGH ⚡️ I’ll be in your town May 9th f PITTSBURGH ⚡️ I’ll be in your town May 9th from 2–4pm with Jimmy DiResta, Derek From Malden, Paul Jackman, Graz, and Papa Chad.

I think it’s important for makers to get out of the shop every once in a while and spend time with other people who understand what we do.

I’m looking forward to hanging out and talking with whoever shows up. Please consider coming through!

I appreciate Carolina immensely for throwing events like this one 🖤💛

I’ve gone back and forth on this for a long time I’ve gone back and forth on this for a long time.

I never wanted to make something that felt like a handout or turn this into a situation where I’m chasing more content just to justify it.

But a lot of people have asked how they can support Call Me Mabie, and this felt like the most honest way to do it.

It’s nothing overcomplicated… just a place to share what’s already happening behind the scenes and give people a closer look at the process.

If you’re interested, it’s there. If not, nothing changes.

Either way, I appreciate you being here.

The link is in my profile. Thank you.

Loss, chaos, and things falling apart faster than Loss, chaos, and things falling apart faster than I could keep up with describes the past year. There were moments I genuinely didn’t know how I was going to get through it- mentally, financially, or otherwise. And yeah, at a point or two, that meant hiding in an airport bathroom trying to pull it together while stress-sweating through my shirt like a crazy person. But in the middle of all of it, people showed up: the kind who remind you who you are when everything else is trying to convince you otherwise. I’m still in it, still figuring things out, and still rebuilding. But I’m not done… not even close. If you’ve supported me, checked in, watched a video, or just quietly followed along… thank you. It matters more than you probably realize. We keep going ⚡️

This is Taylor. We were younguns together, survive This is Taylor. We were younguns together, survived living together during the pandy, and argued over Monopoly like it was life or death. Fast forward to 2022 and we’re in Nashville running around all day taking photos with zero plan and way too much creative freedom. She picked everything. I just sat passenger princess and pressed the shutter button. Somehow it worked. My beautiful friend @taylormartini_ is the longest running friend I have and still one of my favorite people to capture.

Back when I moved to New England, I didn’t know Back when I moved to New England, I didn’t know many people. Yet somehow, @derekfrommalden felt like a friendly neighbor right away. We didn’t hang out all the time nor did we talk every day but when I needed someone, he had my back without question or hesitation. Since then, we’ve made really fun content together, he has put my name in rooms I never thought I’d be in, and he has always looked out for me like a big sister. You might know him from Netflix’s ‘Making Fun’ but I just know him as a really good friend. Happy birthday, Derek 🖤

P.J. Fetscher calls himself an “urban lumberjack P.J. Fetscher calls himself an “urban lumberjack,” which is pretty accurate.

He’s also a high school shop teacher- one of the few still giving kids a real shot at working with their hands.

“The Evolution of Tables” wasn’t some big idea. He made one because he needed it, someone bought it, so he made another, then another, and they just kept getting better.

That’s it.

No gimmick, no shortcut- just someone putting in the time and getting better at his craft 🖤🪚

I’ve been thinking a lot about the people I woul I’ve been thinking a lot about the people I would’ve looked up to… pif I were born in a different time. This go, it was Mike Pekovich (@pekovichwoodworks). Getting to spend a full day in his shop, watching how he works, how he thinks, how he approaches the craft- it’s the kind of experience I don’t take lightly. He’s the kind of person I would’ve looked up to no matter when I was born. And yet somehow, this is what I get to do.

I’d like to give a huge thank you to @carolinashoe for supporting these films and keeping us going through a long day on our feet in the shop. Mike was wearing the Braze Composite Toe Light Duty Work Boot and I had on the Elm 8” Unlined Logger- both built for exactly this kind of day.

I had the opportunity to spend the day with @pekovichwoodworks who is the editor and creative director of @finewoodworkingmagazine digging into the philosophy behind the work. I’m beyond grateful he opened up his home and shop and trusted me with his time as well as helping share his story in this way. If you’re interested in checking it out, the link is in my profile.

Every time I ask someone if I can film a documenta Every time I ask someone if I can film a documentary about them, I hear the same thing: “I need to clean my shop first”. And the first thing they say when I walk in is always “sorry it’s such a mess”.
•
But it’s never about the “mess”. Everyone thinks their shop is chaos.
•
What I’ve learned is that you can tell a lot about someone by their shop. It’s not about what’s in it but instead by what’s used enough to matter: the tools they keep coming back to, the methods they’ve figured out over time, and so on.
•
It quickly becomes much less about the tools and starts to feel like a reflection of how they work, think, and what they care about.

•
Because of Roku, the films have been able to keep going and now live on Roku Channel, Amazon Prime, and even AppleTV apparently which I only just discovered recently.
•
That means more people are discovering the incredible makers in this community which has always been the whole point.
•
I’m really thankful for everyone who has been part of this adventure and my life’s passion.

Sam is both to me. Watching the way she moves through the world with talent, grit, and kindness, as well as an unbelievable work ethic, has always pushed me to want to be better, both in the shop and as a person.
